Why aren’t your Facebook ads working?
Now before you say “Facebook Ads don’t work for my business” listen to this.
Transcript of the Video: Why aren’t your Facebook Ads Working?
Hey, welcome to reservations. I’m back with the big guy. Andrew Mccauley. I’m Jeff Harrison. We are Reservations and we’re back here in Palm Springs, we’re downtown. In fact, we’re in front of the brand new Starbucks. Now, Jeff, I think you’ve been in here a couple times. This Starbucks is amazing. Have you ever seen a Starbucks that actually, it’s like a bar? You go up and you can order especially brewed coffees a little bit more expensive than the normal Starbucks. Although, there is a section where you can order your normal Starbucks, but if you want an experience these guys are doing a pretty good job.
Yeah, I think they’re doing a great job. Plus I love this whole area out here, Andrew and the patio. You can’t really, you know, all this sitting extra stuff and they’ve got the misters going and so, Hey Paul, welcome. Welcome, this morning. Thanks for joining us. It is a different feel and its right down here in front of the Rowan Hotel down in Palm Springs. This is a new six-story hotel that you know, under some controversy, but now it’s open. It’s a beautiful landmark. It’s a great place to come.
Today though, Andrew, we’re going to talk about something that we hear all the time and it’s such I don’t know, I don’t know how to categorize it. It’s one of those things that it can influence people not to do something because it didn’t work. And people say, “Hey, you know what? I tried that Facebook advertising and it doesn’t work for my business”. What do you say to that? I’m just going to hand you the mic because I know you’re probably going to in a bit of rant.
Strange Concept, But Think About It
Oh, we’ll get rant alert. I hear that all the time too. You know, Facebook ads don’t work. I always ask when I’m teaching facebook ads, how many people have run ads? They’ll put the hand up. How many of them have worked for you? And only hands come down. Now, one of the things you’ve got to think about and remember I want you to picture this, okay? A little kid holding a hose, trying to fill up a kiddie pool. Okay?
Strange concept, but think about it. Most people, like that little kid trying to fill up the pool, they are trying to run ads, and the result is to fill up the little kiddie pool, get some sort of result, right? Now when they come along and they’re like, oh, these Facebook ads don’t work. You mentioned the little kid was saying to this kid, Hey, your job is to fill up the pool, but the pool doesn’t get filled, so we throw the kid away. Well, we throw the pool away.
Find Your Target Market
The The actual fact is that the kid may not be the problem. There may be, and this is the same with Facebook ads, is there a number of reasons why your ads will not work? Firstly, the kid may not even have the tap on. People are thinking well, let’s throw away the pool because the pool is not working. It’s not the pool and not the kid. It’s the tap that wasn’t working in the back end, or maybe the hose wasn’t connected to the tap or maybe there’s a kink in the hose or maybe the kid is facing the wrong way. All right, well maybe the pool’s got a hole in it. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why the pool doesn’t get filled. It’s the same with Facebook ads. Maybe your target market is wrong. Maybe you’re looking for the wrong person.
Have the Right Audience
Maybe they’re message is the wrong message for the people that are there. Okay, so there are a number of things that you’ve got to look at why your Facebook ads aren’t working. Unfortunately, Jeff, most people just say, “Hey, I tried it once and it didn’t work”. There was not just one way to make the facebook ad work. There are lots of moving parts. That’s the challenge with Facebook, you’ve got to have the right audience. You’ve got to know who your customer is and have the right message. You’ve got to have the right flow through from an ad to wherever you’re sending that person. So one of my biggest challenges is, and I think most people’s biggest challenges are to make sure that all of the dots are connected so that that ad flows smoothly. There you go, that’s my little rant.
Opportunity For Those Who Do Run Ads Could Be Massive
Yeah, let me hit you right on that, on that train. There’s a new feature in Facebook which we just love. Some people freaked out like, oh my God, we can’t have that. And it’s really, it allows you to go to any business and look on the left-hand side. Down towards the bottom, it says Info and Ads and you can see if they’re running ads and if they’re running ads. It’ll show you the ad and they have to be live. They could have done something in the past or they have nothing going live now, Andrew and it won’t show, but if they have live ads running right now.
So, for fun because of our industry that we work with our restaurants, I did some investigation yesterday. I did about maybe 25 restaurants in the Coachella Valley area. Well, known restaurants. I’m not going to pull any of them out. Some are just down the street from where we’re standing and I looked and only out of let’s say those 20 restaurants, there were two that had any Facebook ads.
Now, first of all, what does that mean? That means the opportunity for those who do run ads could be massive. Now, the second thing, Andrew, is I looked at both those ads and man talk about disconnected dots. One, all they had on there was a menu and they had some, they had this long, a bunch of type of a written copy of their offer. I t was so difficult to read through. Keeping in mind that, hey, your ad is probably going to be served upon a mobile device. So if you’re looking at a mobile device on that, I would probably turn it off before I went any further.
This Is Not Cryptocurrency
The second one is all it was doing was trying to get likes and shares. Brutal. What that’s like? If anybody out there, this is not cryptocurrency gang, you cannot take those likes and shares to the bank and do anything with them. They’re no good. It’s almost like, you know, we gave this great presentation. Somebody says, “Hey that was a great presentation”. Well, that’s like an insult because they didn’t buy your product in the back. So a couple things I want to point out that you can do better.
First of all, this is a visual-centric business. The restaurant we get excited about seeing your food. We get excited about seeing that drink menu or not the drink menu, but the actual drink, the cocktail with the layout of the place. Absolutely. None of that existed in either one of those ads. There was no visual support. It was boring and looked like a test paper you got back from your teacher in school. It was just all written on blank.
Add Visual Content
So first thing you can do is make sure you add visual content. The second thing you can do is make sure you have good copy, concise copy. What are you trying to do? That ad should be driving them to take action. Neither one of those ads had a call the action. It was just blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Right? So it’s sad to see this because people are throwing money away. I mean it’s, you know, we’re in, especially in this valley, runs middle of summer, although it doesn’t look like it, we’re in the middle of summer. It’s a low season. They can’t afford to be throwing money away like that because they’re not going to be able to bank on what they’re trying to get their money or the return, anyway.
We Are Going To Give Advice
Yeah. Now we are going to take those two restaurants. We’re going to take their ads and we’re going to deconstruct them and we’re going to offer advice on what they could have done differently. If you’re interested in being a part of that, well, this is a private thing. It’s like I’m not going to, we’re not going to blast it out over here on Reservations. But if you’d like to see what they were doing and what they could do, we want you to join us. So just put yes in the comment, and when we get this done, we’ll ping you and let you know that now you can see this particular video.
I think again, it’s like I said the other day, if I gave you a bicycle or even let’s say a bicycle and you got on it. You try to ride backward, and then you say you claim this doesn’t work. You’re right. You’re using it incorrectly. And I think a lot of people out there, they’ll turn over to you and say, “Hey, you know what? I noticed you have time Andrew. I know you’re our bellman, but can you do me a favor? Let’s run some Facebook advertising”. You’ve got no idea.
How Much Time Do We Spend Learning About Facebook Advertising?
Like how much time do we spend learning about Facebook advertising? Every day, all day? You know there’s that business. This is what we do. We live for this sort of stuff and it changes all the time so it’s busy for us to keep up with it and we’re doing a full time. So you know some of these restaurants or any businesses out there, it’s sad because they’ve got to compete yet they’re not spending the right time, the right resources to compete properly.
So if you’re interested in that, we invite you to join us. Tomorrow on the show, we’re going to have Joe from Joey’s just down the street here. Joey’s cafe has been in business for quite some time. I got a nice interview with him lined up, so that’ll be live. If you’re interested in figuring out, hey, he’s open during the summer, he’s making it go. What are his tricks or tips? What are his strategies for getting through the summer in Palm Springs, which is off-season? Why is he here? We invite you to join us tomorrow. That’s around 9:00 tomorrow morning, we’ll be live then. What are we going to do right now? I think we’ll have to get a coffee. Let’s go get. Let’s go to Starbucks. And get a coffee.
We Want You To Succeed In This Online Jungle
I want to thank everybody for joining us. Let’s see. We have hey Lane, been thinking about you a lot. Prayers for you know who, everything is good. Hey Spencer, thanks for joining us. Jeffrey Land. Hey, guys thank you for joining us. Sorry about having to lean in like that. That’s the trade of this. You can get a closeup of the red-eye, the view. So anyway, so we’re going to have a coffee. If you liked this, please share it. Invite people and join us. It’s called Reservations. And what’s the reason for this? Oh, we’re doing it for the restaurant industry. We want you guys to succeed in this online jungle.
Until tomorrow, have a great day. We’re going to get out of this humid weather. It’s very humid. It’s really strange here in Palm Springs. If you haven’t been here or you are not here, it’s really weird. That’s all I can say. But we’re here and we’re going to go into that and have a little coffee. Take care. All right. Bye. Bye.
